Sulphur has big size. Repulsion between the lone pairs on sulphur is less in S – S bond due to which bond dissociation energy is high. Sulphur has vacant orbital which can be extended to higher valency. Due to this sulphur shows strong catenation tendency.
Sulphur shows catenation upto 8 atoms in the formation of S8 molecule of sulphur. H2S2, H2S3, H2S4 are the other examples of sulphur catenation.
