Pulley: It is a metallic (or wooden) disc with a grooved rim. A string is passed around the groove at the rim.The disc rotates about an axle passing through its centre. The axle is fixed rigidly to a frame by meansof nails.
A single pulley or a combination of two or more pulleys fixed in a frame is called a block, while a string(rope or chain) that winds around the pulleys in different blocks is known as tackle.
A pulley can be used in two ways:
(i) as a fixed pulley by keeping its axis of rotation fixed in position, and
(ii) as a movable pulley without keeping its axis of rotation fixed i.e., keeping it movable.
