- The heart, actually, is located in the center of the chest, behind the sternum or the breastbone.
- The human heart has four chambers, namely the left atrium (LA), the left ventricle (LV), the right atrium (RA) and the right ventricle (RV).
- On both sides, the lower ventricles are thicker and stronger than the upper atria.
- However, the muscle wall surrounding the left ventricle is much thicker than the wall surrounding the right ventricle due to the higher force needed to pump the blood through the whole of the body.
- So, the increased muscle mass of the left ventricle causes the heart to offset slightly to the left and since it is the largest part of the heart, it gives a considerable impression of the heart being more to the left.
- This is also the reason that you feel the heartbeat on the left side of the chest since the LV generates the highest pressure.
