Ernst Renan (1823-92) was a French philosopher. He outlined his understanding of what makes a nation. He criticised the notion that a nation is formed by a common language race, religion or territory. His idea of a nation was:

A nation is the culmination of a long past of endeavours, sacrifices and devoution. The base of a nation is a heroic past, great men and social capital.

The people in a nation are united if they share common glories in the past, have common will in the present and the wish to perform heroic deeds together.
