When the charge carriers, the electrons have an alternative pathway to flow, the parallel resistor, they'll not just wait to pass through the resistor but will flow through alternative, the parallel resistor.
Hence the electric current gets distributed, just like water flowing through pipes will distribute and flow through parallel pipe connections.
