Due to which property of the stone do we get hurt when we kick a stone?

When we kick a stone, our foot is suddenly stopped . In other words, the time in which the foot comes to rest is very small. When time factor is small , force on our foot (i.e. rate of change of momentum) is large and we get hurt.
