Expert Answer
- Like animals, plants also have an outer covering in the form of cell membrane.
- The cell membrane is flexible and semi-permeable and hence, cannot fight the adverse variations on its own.
- Therefore, a stiff outer covering is present in plant cells which protects and gives shape and rigidity to the cell.
- This additional layer is called the cell wall. It is made of cellulose.
