  Diffusion Osmosis
1 It is the movement of any substance from a region of its higher concentration to a region of its lower concentration. It is the transport of water from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration, through a semi-permeable membrane.
2 Here, there is no need for a semi-permeable membrane. Osmosis requires a semi-permeable membrane to be present between two solutions of different concentrations.
3 Doesn’t need water for movement Needs water for movement.
4 Diffusion can occur in any state. Osmosis occurs only in liquid state.
5 It is dependent on the free energy of the molecules of diffusing substance only  and not on the presence of other substances in the system. Osmosis is influenced by the presence of other substances in the system.

  Cell membrane Cell wall
1 It is present in both plant and animal cells. It is present in plant cells, but absent in animal cells.
2 It is thin and highly flexible. It is thick, slightly flexible and rigid.
3 It is present within the cell wall and forms the outer layer in case of cells lacking cell wall. It is the outermost layer in plant cells.
4  cell membrane is made up of mainly phospholipids. It also contains proteins, sugars and cholesterol.  Cell wall is made up of cellulose, pectin and lignin.

5

6

Cell membrane is selectively permeable

Cell membrane permits entry and exit of important materials into and out of the cell and acts as barrier to other materials.

Cell wall is completely permeable to water and substances in solution.

Cell wall provides mechanical strength to support the cell and permits the cell to become turgid. Cell wall allows exchange of materilals between the living cell contents.

  Organelle Organ
1 It is a differentiated structure within a cell, such as a mitochondrion, vacuole, or chloroplast, that performs a specific function. It is a group of tissues that perform a specific function or group of functions.
2 It is microscopic. It is macroscopic.
3 It is found in both unicellular and multicellular organisms. It is only found in higher multicellular organisms.
4 Examples are mitochondria, chloroplast, ER etc. Examples are liver, skin, etc.
