Expert Answer
Vernier callipers
- Vernier callipers are designed such that the length of n divisions on vernier scale is equal to the length of (n-1) divisions of the main scale.
- Generally, a vernier scale has 10 divisions and the total length of these 10 divisions is equal to the length of 9 divisions of the main scale.
- The main scale is graduated with value of one division on it equal to 1 mm.
- Thus, each division of vernier scale is smaller in size by 1/10 mm than a division on the main scale.
- Vernier calliper can be used to m,easure the size of anything having size more than the least count of the instrument.
- In a Vernier calliper, the division just before or coinciding with the 0th division of vernier scale gives the main scale reading of the callipers
and the number of vernier division coinciding with any main scale division gives the vernier scale reading of callipers.
