Expert Answer:

During the colonial period, the British passed various constitutional Acts (1909, 1919 and 1935) which were mainly opposed by the Indian nationalists. In 1946, the British decided to examine the possibility of granting independence to India. As a result, a British cabinet mission was dispatched to India to hold discussions with the representatives of British India and to set up a constituent body and an executive council. The Constituent Assembly was formed in 1946 to draft the Constitution of the country. The Assembly consisted of about 300 people who were expert in their own fields.  The assembly represented people from various regions and linguistic and religious communities.

The Constituent Assembly worked in a systematic, open and consensual manner while drafting the Constitution of the country. Discussions took place on each clause of the Constitution. Every document was debated. The Constituent Assembly took three years to prepare the Constitution of the country. Our Constitution came into force on 26 January, 1950.
