degrees of freedom

Dear vvr vutukuru
Degree of freedom (f) means number of independent co-ordinates required to specify a system.
In three dimensions N number of particles of a system has 3N degrees of freedom.
Now if k be the number of constraints then degree of freedom gets reduced given by, f = 3N-k.
