Work is done if:
1. a force is applied on the object and
2. the object is displaced from its original position.
No work is said to be done if any of the two conditions is not satisfied.

Mathematically, work done by a force acting on an object is equal to the product of force (F) and the displacement (s) of the object in the direction of the force.
W = F x s = Fs

SI unit of work is joule.
