Perkin reaction

 Aromatic aldehydes on reaction with aliphatic acid anhydrides in presence of sodium salt of the same acid as base, to form condensation products whch upon hydrolysis give ⍺, β-unsaturated acids. This reaction is called perkin condensation. For example, when benzaldehyde is heated with acetic anhydride in presence of sodium acetate, the product thus formed on hydrolysis gives cinnamic acid.
