The cord is generally made of copper and the heating element of nichrome. Copper is a good conductor whose resistivity is low. Nichrome on the other hand has much higher resistivity. So when the same current flows through them I2Rt which is the energy dissipated - is more in nichrome than in copper. So nichrome becomes hotter and hence glows
