The sum of two numbers is 38 and the difference between them is 2. Find the numbers.
 
 
Solution :
Let the numbers be x and y.
The sum of two numbers is 38.
Hence, x + y = 38  ...(i)
The difference between them is 2.
x - y = 2 ...(ii)
Adding (i) and (ii) we get 2x = 36
x = 18
and 18 + y = 38 
y = 20
 
Hence, the numbers are 18 and 20.
