How Ali came to be a familiar figure in the postoffice?
A. Ali had been visiting the post office for five years continuously, expecting his daughter's letter. Although Miriam, his daughter, never wrote to him once in the five years, the post office became familiar with this old man. be it any weather, old Ali would not miss a day and would trudge to the post office religiously every day.

For Ali how the post office appeared as a pilgrimage?
A. For Ali, the journey to the post office was like a pilgrimage. The post office was a destination for him where he wished to find peace and contentment by receiving a letter from his only daughter, Miriam.

Why did the post master say that "mad-men are strange people"?
A. The postmaster said that madmen are strange people because he had seen some fellow postmen doing things that according to him defied reason. He had seen a postman in Ahmedabad do nothing but make little heaps of dust. Then, there was another who had a habit of going to the river bed in order to pour water on a certain stone every day.

Why did Ali told Lakshmi Das that he should deliver the letter to Ali's grave?
A. Old Ali told Lakshmi Das that should Miriam's letter arrive, he must deliver the letter to Ali's grave. Ali was old and tired and had probably come to know that his time to bid goodbye to life had come.

What was the change in the post master at change?
A. At the end, the postmaster had a change of heart. He understood what it meant for a father to long for some form of communication from his children. His heart reproached him for having treated Ali badly and for not understanding the old man's plight.
