Can we say that phototropism is is essential?If so, why?

Yes.
Without phototropism the plant shoots will not be able to grow towards light and the leaves will not be able to able to carry out photosynthesis. Also the roots will not grow away from light and grow towards soil and water. Many other plant processes are also influenced by phototropism.
