Can the work done by friction be even negative or zero ? Plz give example of each.

Expert Answer:

If an object that is sliding forward stops due to friction then work done by friction is negative.

Say an object slides through a distance of 1m before coming to rest. During this time the work done by friction will be negative as displacement is in the forward direction and friction is in the reverse direction.

Work done can be zero if force is zero or displacement is zero or the angle between the force and displacement is zero.

Say the frictional force is so large that the body cannot move, then work done by friction is zero.
