Expert Answer:

Yes. HIV can spread if a person having AIDS donates blood to a normal person without AIDS.

HIV infection is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. The end stage of this is known as AIDS. HIV infection spreads through:

  • Sexual contact with an infected person
  • Sharing contaminated needles such as those used by intravenous drug abusers
  • Transfusion of contaminated blood
  • A HIV-infected pregnant woman to her unborn baby

The individuals with AIDS can pass on the virus to the recipients of their blood. It is therefore extremely important that those who may be exposed to the HIV virus do not donate blood.
