When a beam of x rays strikes a crystal surface in which the layers of atoms or ions are seperated by a distance, the maximum intensity of the reflected rays occurs when sin θ = λ / 2d , where θ ( bragg angle ) is the complement of the angle of incidence and n is an integer.
