Electric dipole consists of two charges of same magnitude q but opposite in sign placed at a small distsnce l apart.
 
Dipole moment vector p  is defined as p = ql , its direction is from negative charge to positive charge
 
Let centre of dipole is at origin as shown in figure. At a point A which is suffiently long distance d from origin so that d >> l,
 
angle θ made by electric field E with y-axis direction and angle θ made by line joining dipole centre to
 
the point P with direction of dipole is same, as shown in figure.
 
Hence at A,  if electric field is perpendicular to dipole moment p means,  then angle θ = 90o
