An alloy of copper, gold, silver is found to have Cu atoms forming simple cubic lattice. If Ag atoms occupy all the face centres and Au atoms at the body centres what is the simplest formula of the alloy?

Expert Answer:
Cu is forming simple cubic lattice
So, effective no. of Cu atoms in the unit cell = 1/8 × 8 = 1 Cu
Ag occupy all the face centres
So, effective no. of Ag atoms in the unit cell = 1/2 × 6 = 3 Ag
Au atom at the body centre
So, effective no. of Au atom in the unit cell = 1 Au
Thus, the simplest formula of the alloy = CuAg3Au
