α-amino acids have relatively higher melting points than corresponding halo acids. Explain.

The α-amino acids exist as a zwitter ion,

Therefore, due to strong inter molecular dipolar attractions or electrostatic attractions, the melting points of α-amino acids are much higher than those of corresponding halo acids which are covalent compounds and have only weak intermolecular hydrogen bonding in them.
