Fish is a cheap and important source of animal protein for our food and fish culture ensures abundant supply of this rich protein source.
Fish culture is considered to be a potential source of employment for poor farmers and displaced capture fishermen. Rapid development of aquaculture has already generated considerable employment through culture of marketable fish, fish seed production, and marketing of fish and fish seed. Fish culture can greatly contribute to the socio-economic welfare of rural populations of especially developing countries.
Fish culture provides a base to ancilliary industries.
An added advantage also is that unlike sea fish or other animal proteins, the fish from the local fields would cause no transport problem and would be most fresh and healthy. In other words, the production is carried out within easy reach of consumers. Also the harvesting can be adjusted to demand, thus minimising distribution problems and spoilage.
Fish culture can also be carried out in integrated fish culture system. This gives the farmer an off-season occupation and increases the income without increasing expenses.
