Potassium pellets contain potasium chloride. Potassium chloride cannot absorb carbon dioxide gas.
Potassium hydroxide is used to absorb carbon dioxide gas. This creates a vaccum like conditions and eliminates carbon dioxide completely, which might otherwise interfere in the photosynthesis experiment.
