AC and DC

  • It should be noted that AC (Alternating Current) and DC (Direct Current ) are two types of the same form of energy i.e electric current.
  • The only major difference between these two is the polarity, DC has  fixed polarity (poles remain as they are, all throughout) and
AC has shifting poles whose polarity changes alternatively in a continuous manner.
  • Because of this vibrative nature of AC, it constitutes of an additional element called frequency which gives indicates the magnitude of the discussed vibration.
  • This is why same voltage reading is expressed differently in both, for e.g. DC : 220 V and AC : 220 V, 50 Hz

Effects of shock
  • The consequent factors such as danger in case of shock or the repulsive/attractive nature of the shock remains similar for both.
  • It is the amount of voltage, point and time of contact that majorly determines the effects of shock.
  • After shock effects cannot be generalised on the basis of AC or DC.
  • However, neither currents are attractive in nature.
  • Electric shocks cause the muscle to contract for e.g. if we hold onto a live cable, either AC or DC then, uncontrolled muscle contraction would cause us to grip onto the cable and eventually get stuck to it.
  • It is the muscles that cause the repulsive effect as they involuntarily contract due to the shock.
  • AC causes repetitive contractions because of the frequency in most cases.
  • So if it is AC or DC, shock of a live wire will cause the same effect i.e to probably convulse into a grip, causing us to grip onto the live wire.
