acid aqccepts a pair of electrons and a base donates a pair of electron...why pairs?

Acids do not always accept a lone pair,this is only the concept of Lewis that acids are those subsatances which is capable of accepting a pair of electrons.Accirding to this concept acids should have atleast one pair of electrons less.
