Account for why the alkaline earth metals are harder than Alkali metals?

The electronic configuration of alkaline earth metals is ns2, while for alkali metals is ns1. So, in alkaline earth metals due to increased Zeff, there are more electrons in smaller area(atomic radii). That's why they are more denser.
