As we know, resonance occurs when two objects oscillate with same vibrating frequency. i.e., when one of the objects vibrates, it forces the other object to vibrate as well and in our case the vibrating tuning fork causes air particles around and inside the air column to vibrate as well. As a result of this, a loud sound is heard when the natural frequency of the air column is tuned to that of the vibrating tuning fork.
