CBSE Class 11-science Answered

A steel cylinder contains a gas at 250kpa and at 27°c. The cylinder can withstand a pressure of (10)*6 Pa. Due to fire, the temperature of the room rises. If melting point of the cylinder is 1527°c, predict whether the cylinder will blow up before it melts or not ?

Given:

P1 = 250 kPa

     = 250 × 103 Pa

T1 = 27 °C

     =27+273

     = 300K

P2 = 106 Pa

T1 =?

straight P subscript 1 over straight T subscript 1 space equals space straight P subscript 2 over straight T subscript 2

fraction numerator 250 cross times 10 cubed over denominator 300 end fraction space equals space 10 to the power of 6 over straight T subscript 2

straight T subscript 2 space equals space fraction numerator 10 to the power of 6 cross times 300 over denominator 250 cross times 10 cubed end fraction

straight T subscript 2 space equals 1200 space straight K
The melting point of the cylinder is 1527 K and when pressure is of 106 Pa the temperature is 1200 K.

Therefore the cylinder will blow up before it melts.
