a spong when kept on the surface of water floats but when it is pushed in towards the surface it sinks . why ? has the density of the object increased?

A sponge is a porous substance.
When it is pushed in towards the surface, water seeps inside it and its density increases.
The weight of sponge is more and the upthrust of water on sponge is less.
Thus, the sponge sinks.
