Suddenly Raj found in a corner of a street that was a dead end. He turned and realized that someone had been following him and had taken cover behind the huge garbage bin at the other end of the alley. Raj was having all sorts of wrong thoughts imagining what could be behind that bin. At first he thought it was a mugger who was waiting to attack him and rob him. That was what the area was notorious for; people being attacked and assaulted by thugs and criminals even at 8 pm. Then he thought it must be the beggar who was eyeing his food packet because he had seen him buy a takeaway from a restaurant. He was so nervous and sweaty that he must have regretted his decision to go out with friends a thousand times, because his parents tried reasoning with him so may times. They repeatedly told him how unsafe it was to go for a movie in that part of the city post sunset. But the impulsive teenager that he was, Raj refused to pay any heed to what they said. 

As Raj was still mentally apologising to his parents, the bin rattled, and his heart skipped a beat. He wanted to take the phone out from his pocket but his fingers were trembling so badly that it was a bad idea. At a moment where he thought he had given up, he felt his feet moving in the direction of the bin, as if instinctively trying to escape. The next moment his feet were racing in the direction of the bin ready to kick it so hard that whatever was behind it would either scamper away scared or be injured, giving Raj the opportunity to escape from the dead end. 

As soon as he reached the bin and kicked it, he heard muffled, feeble cries coming from behind the bin. Mustering some courage, Raj peeped to see what it was, and to his surprise, saw a puppy trembling with fear, hiding its face with its tiny little paws. Raj didn’t know for a moment whether to laugh at how the incident ended or cry remembering how afraid he had been for a few minutes. He picked up the scared little canine and hugged it with all the warmth he could offer. Then they got out of the alley and started walking home. He thought, how wonderful it will be if his parents allowed him to have a pet!
