A resistance R is connected across a cell of emf E and internal resistance r. A potentiometer now measures the pot. diff. btw the terminals of the cell as V. pls explain how.

r = [(E - V) / V].R
this comes out because
the total current flowing in a wire is given as
I = IE - IV
or
V/R = E/r - V/r
which can be rearranged to give the above relation
