CBSE Class 11-science Answered

A narrow sound pulse (for example, a short pip by a whistle) is sent across a medium.  (i)  Does the pulse have a definite (a) wavelength, (b)  frequency, (c)  speed of propagation?  (ii)   If the pulse rate is 1 after every 20s (i.e the whistle is blown for a split second after every 20s), is the frequency of the note produced by the whistle equal to 1/20 = 0.05 Hz?

Expert Answer

(i)  The pulse does not have a definite wavelength or frequency, but has a definite speed of propagation (in a non-dispersive medium).

(ii)  The frequency of the note produced by the whistle is not equal to 1/20 or 0.05 Hz, it is the frequency of pulse repetition.
