A mixture of oxygen and hydrogen is analysed by passing it over hot copper oxide and through a drying tube. Hydrogen reduces the CuO according to the eq. CuO + H2  giving Cu + H2O ; oxygen then oxidise the copper formed : Cu + 1/2 O2 giving CuO .100cm^3 of the mixture measured at 25degree celsius and 750mm yields 84.5cm^3 of dry oxygen measured at 25degree celsius and 750mm after passing over CuO and a drying agent .
