A gun of mass M kg fires a shell of mass 1.5 kg with a velocity of 150 m/s and recoils with a velocity of 1.5 m/s. Calculate the mass of the gun.

Let m1 = mass of the shell; m2 = mass of the gun

v1 = velocity of the shell; v2 = velocity of the gun

Total momentum of the bullet and gun on firing = m1v1 + m2v2

Before firing, both the gun and the bullet are at rest; hence total momentum of bullet and gun = 0

Applying the law of conservation of momentum, we get

m1v1 + m2v2 = 0

1.5 x 150 = m2 x 1.5

m2 = 150 kg = Mass of the gun
