A current carrying wire behaves like a magnet.Does it attract pieces of iron ?My query is:is there any difference between a wire becoming a magnet or behaving like a magnet?

No there is no difference. The magnitism in fire is entirely due to the fluctuations in electric field in space around the wire. There is no change in the wire itself.
