A cricketer has to stop a speeding ball.Should he stop it suddenly keeping his palm or should he stop it gradually pulling his arms and hands backwards.Support this answer with an arguement.

He should stop it gradually by pulling his arms and hands backwards. Gradual stopping of the moving ball will ensure that the rate at which the momentum of the ball is reduced to zero is small.
 
Recall that rate of change in momentum = Change in momentum/ Time taken.
 
In case of gradual stopping of the ball, for a given change in momentum, the rate of change in momentum will be small.
Also from Newton second law, rate of change in momentum = Force applied.
Hence smaller rate of change in momentum will imply smaller acting on the hands while taking the catch.
