begin mathsize 12px style The space relation space between space Celsius space and space Fahrenheit space temperatures space is
degree straight C equals 5 over 9 open parentheses degree straight F minus 32 close parentheses
Now comma space it space is space given space that space after space lowering space the space temperature space the space Fahrenheit space thermometer space reads space 140 space degree straight F.
Hence comma space we space have
degree straight C equals 5 over 9 open parentheses 140 minus 32 close parentheses equals 5 over 9 cross times 108 equals 60 space degree straight C
Now comma space the space boiling space point space of space water space is space 100 space degree straight C. space So comma space after space lowering space the space thermometer space reads space 60 space degree straight C
Hence comma space the space fall space in space temperature space is space 100 minus 60 equals 40 space degree. end style
