A combination of two conductors placed close to each other is called a capacitor. One of the conductors is given a positive charge +Q and the other is given an equal negative charge –Q. The conductor with positive charge is called positive plate and the conductor with negative charge is called negative plate.
The potential difference between two plates is called the potential of the capacitor. The positive plate is at a potential V+ and the other is at potential V-.
Hence, potential of the capacitor is ,
V = V+ - V-
