A block and tackle arrangement consists of 5 pulleys. It is used to lift a load of 50 kgf steadily to a height of 20m. The wrk done against friction is 2000J. Find 1) the work input 2) the efficiency of the system 3) the effort needed to lift the load

Let us consider acceleration due to gravity g = 10 m/s2
 
Load = 50 kgf = 50×10 = 500 N
distance to raise the load 20 m
 
Work input = 500 N × 20 m = 10000 J
 
Work against friction = 2000 J
 
Ideal workdone to lift 500 N load  = 10000 = 10000 J
 
Total workdone that includes workdone against friction = 12000 J
 
efficiency = 10000 / 12000 ≈ 0.83
 
ideal effort to lift 500 N load with 5 pulleys system = 500 N/5 = 100 N
 
effort involved to overcome friction while lifting the load to 20 m distance = 2000/20 = 100 N
 
total effort = 100 N + 100 N = 200 N
