A besieged garrison of 600 men have provision to last 35 days at a certain rate of issue. How long would the provision last if the garrison were reinforced by 300 men and the daily allownce per men reduced in the ratio 5:6?

Let the original daily allowance per man be M units.
 
Therefore, total provision = 35 x 600 x M units. = 21000 x M units.
 
Now, when the garrison is increased by 300 men, and daily allowance is reduced to 5/6 of the original, let us assume that provision last for D days.
 
Therefore,
 
21000 x M = (600 + 300) x 5/6 x M x D
 
=> 21000 x M = 900 x 5/6 x M x D
 
=> D = 21000 / 750
 
=> D = 28 days.
 
Hence the provision will last for 28 days.
