Dr. B.R. Ambedkar after the Second Round table Conference, demanded separate electorates for the dalits. THis was vehemently opposed by Gandhi. When the British government conceded Ambedkar’s demand, Gandhiji began a fast unto death because he believed that this will slow down the process of natinal integration. This led to the signing of the Poona Pact in September, 1932. Its significances was that tt gave the Depressed Classes (later to be known as the Schedule Castes) reserved seats in provincial and central legislative councils but they were to be voted in by the general electorate. The Poona Pact marked the begining of a movement against untouchability within the Indian nationalist movement.
