This can be easily proved by considering an equilateral triangle.
Draw a perpendicular AD.
Consider triangle, ABD,
BD = 1/2 BC = 1/2 AB (since, AB = BC = CA and AD is perpendicular to BC)
angle BAD = 30 degree
Hence, clearly, the side opposite to angle 30 degree in right triangle ABD is half of the hypotnuese AB.
