Applications of eddy currents:

Dead beat galvanometer:
A coil of moving coil galvanometer (MCG) used for measuring current is wound on copper frame.
When current flow, coil gets deflected and as soon as current stops coil tends to oscillate about its mean position. When eddy current are generated in metal frame it opposes oscillatory motion. As a result, coil comes to rest immediately.

Electric brakes:
Electric brakes are  used in electric trains. When brakes are applied, strong magnetic field is applied across the axle surrounded by the cylindrical drum and generates eddy currents which opposes the relative motion between the stationary field and axle causing the trains to slow down and come to rest immediately.

Speedometer:
Same principle is used in speedometer so that the pointer attached to the magnet point to the speed of of vehicle on calibarted scale of speedometer.
Induction motor:
Eddy current in induction motor reduces the relative motion by rotating the axle in same direction as that of the magnetic field. This is the principle of indution motor.

Induction furnace:
The heating effect of eddy current is used for melting metal in induction furnace.

Disadvantages of Eddy-currents:
1. Eddy currents causes major heat loss
2. Magnetic flux leakage
