When two or more persons bear the same cut-off marks in AIEEE, then the inter-se merit of the students would be determined by the AIEEE by comparing the student’s AIEEE mathematics marks first and followed by their physics marks and their ages; in case of engineering admissions and in case of architectural and planning admissions, it compares the student’s AIEEE aptitude marks first and followed by the mathematics marks and their ages.

CBSE to hold AIEEE again, on May 11

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has again rescheduled the all-India engineering entrance examination (AIEEE).

A notice on the board website stated that the May 8 examination will now take place on May 11, from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm. Pune is one of the 38 centres across the country where the examination would be held.

The AIEEE, scheduled for May 1, started after two hours due to the question paper leakage in Uttar Pradesh. Hundreds of students could not write the exam as the timing clashed with the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) entrance examination.

The board later announced that examinees who could not appear for the May 1 test can re-appear on May 8.

However, CBSE has now changed the date from May 8 to May 11, as the date is clashing with other entrance examinations.

According to the details uploaded on the board website http://cbse.nic.in, candidates who missed the examination on May 1 will only be eligible to re-appear for the May 11 test. The centre and roll numbers of such candidates will remain the same.

Such candidates should register online on the CBSE website: (http://www.cbse.nic.in) by May 5. For details, call (011) 22235095 or 22246087 or 22236110, or 18002096030 or 1800117002 between 10 am and 5 pm on working days.

44,930 students to write AIEEE today in city

April 30: As many as 44,930 students will sit for the prestigious All India Engineering Entrance Exam-2011 to be held on Sunday in Hyderabad.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which conducts the exam, clarified that the exam will be held as scheduled on Sunday and it cannot postpone the exam in a single city since it is a common exam at the national-level. Over 11.13 lakh students across the country have registered for the exam.

Nearly 1.25 lakh students from the state registered for the exam which will be also conducted in Guntur, Tirupati, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and Warangal. The exam is also being held in the 'online mode' for the first time from this year, but less than 100 students have registered for the online exam to be held in Hyderabad only. The exam will be held in two sessions. The morning session will be from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm and the noon session from 2 pm to 5 pm.

The CBSE has advised the students to reach the exam centres an hour before the exam commences. It also asked the students to take necessary precautions to reach the centres on time. The AIEEE is a passport to tens of thousands of seats in the 30 National Institutes of Technology and close to 150 engineering colleges.

Can ‘Inspire’ Inspire Students to Take Up Science

School science toppers from across the country — get ready for a special invitation to take up science in higher education and as a career. The Centre is tying up with over 30 central and state boards across India, to send a special letter to students who emerge toppers in the science stream in Classes XII examinations this May and June. These include the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

Under the plan, the letter will specially inform these toppers about the science ministry's ambitions INSIPRE scholarships in a unique bid to attract these students to science in higher education and as a career choice, top government officials told HT.

"It is a most unique method which we are trying and are very hopeful about," a senior official in the department of science and technology (DST) said. The DST met officials of all school boards earlier this month, and the boards suggested sending special letters to science toppers, sources said.

The letters will only be sent to the top 1% of science students in each board - only these students are eligible for the INSPIRE Scholarship for Higher Education. The INSPIRE programme was launched by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2008 as a part of his plan to draw bright young students back into science, at a time when - financially more lucrative educational and career prospects have reduced the attraction of science.

The scholarship for higher education offers a whopping Rs 80,000 a year to each winner for the duration of their undergraduate or masters programme in science in Indian institutions. The DST offers 1000 such scholarships each year.

But the government has struggled to find enough takers for the scholarship — suggesting inadequate awareness of the programme and possibly declining numbers of toppers taking up science after school, officials said.

The special letter will ensure that the topper is aware of the INSPIRE scholarship, while also serving as a select invitation to pursue science ahead.

The Festival Baisakhi

Baisakhi or Vaisakhi Festival is celebrated as the Sikh New Year and the founding of the Khalsa Panth. History of Baisakhi traces its origin from the Baisakhi Day celebrations of 1699 organized by the Tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh to form Khalsa - Brotherhood of Saint Soldiers to fight against tyranny and oppression.

Story of Baisakhi
The story of Baisakhi Festival began with the martyrdom of Guru Teg Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru who was publicly beheaded by the Aurungzeb, the Mughal ruler. Aurungzeb wanted to spread Islam in India and Guru Tegh Bahadur stood up for the rights of Hindus and Sikhs and the Mughals therefore saw him as a threat.

After the death of Guru Teg Bahadur, his son, Guru Gobind Singh became the next Guru of the Sikhs. Guru Gobind Singh wished to instill courage and strength to sacrifice among his fellow men. To fulfil his dream, Guru Gobind Singh called on the historic Baisakhi Day congregation of Sikhs at Keshgarh Sahib near Anandpur on March 30, 1699.

When thousands of people assembled for Guru's blessing, Guru Gobind Singh came out of the tent carrying an unsheathed sword. He gave a powerful speech to infuse courage amongst fellowmen. At the end of the speech he said that every great deed was preceded by equally great sacrifice and demanded that anyone prepared to give his life come forward. On the Guru's third call, a young man offered himself. The Guru took the man inside a tent and reappeared alone with a bloodied sword. Guru Gobind Singh asked for another volunteer.

This was repeated another four times until a total of five Sikhs had gone into the tent with the Guru. Everyone present was worried and though that Guru Gobind Singh has killed five Sikhs. At this point Guru presented all the five men before the people. Every one present was surprised to see all five men alive and wearing turbans and saffron-coloured garments.

These five men were called Panj Piara or 'Beloved Five' by the Guru. The Guru blessed them with a Pahul ceremony. In an iron vessel, the Guru stirred with a sword called Khanda Sahib, the batasha that his wife, Mata Sundari Ji had put into water. The congregation recited verses from scriptures as the Guru performed the sacred ceremony.

The water was now considered the sacred nectar of immortality called amrit. It was first given to the five volunteers, then drunk by the guru and later distributed amongst the crowd. With this ceremony, all those present, irrespective of caste or creed, became members of the Khalsa Pantha (the Order of the Pure Ones).

The Guru regarded the Panch Piaras as the first members of the Khalsa and the embodiment of the Guru himself. With the constitution of the Panj Pyare the high and low castes were amalgamated into one as among the original Panj Pyare, there was one Khatri, shopkeeper; one Jat, farmer; one Chhimba, calico printer; one Ghumar, water-carrier; and one Nai, a barber.

The Guru gave the surname of Singh (Lion) to every Sikh and also took the name for himself. From Guru Gobind Rai he became Guru Gobind Singh. This was seen as a great step in national integration because society at that time was divided on the basis of religion, caste and social status.

Guru Gobind Singh also bestowed on Khalsa, the unique Sikh identity. He directed Sikhs to wear five K's: Kesh or long hair, Kangha or comb, Kripan or dagger, Kachha or shorts and a Kara or bracelet. Guru Gobind Singh also discontinued the tradition of Gurus and asked all Sikhs to accept the Grantha Sahib as their eternal guide. He urged them to come to him with their hair and beard unshorn to get baptized by the sword.

However, for a large section of students, the exam season has just gathered momentum. We're talking of thousands of professional course aspirants - several arts/commerce courses too hold entrances but they are not as much of a rage- who will in the coming month-and-a-half sit for a series of entrance examinations.

Even the confident ones (who are not thinking of backup options one, two and three) have at least half-a-dozen exams ahead of them. What with the IIT-JEE, the All Indian Engineering Entrance Exam (on May 1), the State CET (for the government quota) and the UGET (for the private quota to many of those brand colleges) being the staple set. Add to this the more specialized ones, such as NEST for the Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research, those of the Indian Institutes of Information Technology and various other State entrances and deemed university exams, and the list is exhaustive.

Having just written the PU examination (or equivalent 12th Standard board examination), the concepts are fresh in your mind, so now all you have to do is go ahead and apply them to the format that each entrance test demands, explains Jyothsna Raghuraman, a teacher at a leading coaching institute. She says, "All you need is systematic practice and solving as many papers as possible."

For most State entrances, your 12th Standard syllabus is more than enough - the rest of the battle lies in gaining speed, being familiar with short questions, learning how to identify the less time-consuming ones and learning the short-cuts to solving the mathematic problems.

Once all the topics are covered well, is the time to start identifying patterns in how you answer the test. Coaching centers, teachers or even your parents can help you do so by timing your sessions, pointing out what kind of questions you're constantly doing badly with and what are the subjects that you need more brushing up on.

New Delhi: Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar urged cricket administrators to allow young fans free entry for Test matches to put a brake on the dwindling interest in the longer version of the game.
"My suggestion is that a couple of stands in the stadium should be thrown open, absolutely free, to the school and college students on Saturday and Sunday," the Indian batsman told an Indian newspaper Friday.
"It is very important for them to get a feel of Test cricket. Their first memories of Test cricket will stay with them for the rest of their lives."
"Gradually, they will begin to appreciate the nuances of Test cricket," he added.
'We have to focus on the next generation that has been exposed to one-day and Twenty20 cricket."
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has been concerned over dwindling crowds for Test matches, particularly after poor turnouts during Australia's series in India last year.
Indian cricket officials bussed in school children in Mohali to boost attendance during the second Test against Australia.
ICC president David Morgan hailed South Africa's 2-1 upset series win in Australia this week, urging everyone involved in the game to sustain the buzz around Test cricket.
"The whole Australia-South Africa series and a host of other matches around the world over the past few weeks and months are ample illustrations of the continuing value and relevance of Test cricket in the modern era," Morgan said in a statement.
"For sustained drama, no format of any other sport can match it. The players clearly want and enjoy Test cricket.

Hiranyakashypu was the king of the asuras (demons). His brother had been slain by Vishnu for terrorizing gods and goddesses. So, he wanted to destroy Vishnu and keep other Gods in heaven subdued. He told his soldiers to crush all those who worship Vishnu. But the Gods protected the Devotees of Vishnu.

Hiranyakashypu thought to himself "I will have to match my powers to Vishnu's to rule over the three worlds". So, he began to perform severe penances and tapasya. While he was so occupied, the Gods ransacked his city and destroyed his palace. His Queen was expecting a child then. She was sent by the gods to Sage Narada's hermitage. She lived in the Ashram of the great sage and learned about religion and the glory of Vishnu from him. The child within her, Prahlad, too, absorbed all this knowledge.

Meanwhile, Hiranyakashypu's austerities pleased Brahma and said: "Arise Hiranyakashypu. Any boon that you ask of me shall be yours". Hiranyakashypu said, "I wish that my death be not caused by man or beast, with a weapon or without a weapon, during day or night, indoors or outdoors, on earth or in the sky. Grant me the undisputed lordship over the material world."

Hiranyakashypu brought his wife back to his city where Prahlad was born. He, with his new powers renewed his hostilities against Vishnu and Vishnu's followers. He declared, "There is no one stronger than me. I am the lord of the three worlds. I shall be worshipped as such".

Prahlad in the meanwhile was growing up and was Hiranyakashypu's delight. He asked Prahlad: "Son, tell me what do you think is the best thing in life"? Prahlad replied: "To renounce the world and seek refuge in Vishnu". Hiranyakashypu laughed. Then he called his Son's teacher to him, saying: "Guard him closely. I think that the followers of Vishnu are secretly influencing him. Don't let him out of your sight."

After many months, his teacher said: "Prahlad, I think you are now ready to meet your father." His father asked him: "You have been with your Guru a long time! What have you learnt? Prahlad said: "I have leant that the most worthwhile occupation for anyone is the worship of Lord Vishnu". Hirnaykashypu was very angry: "O cursed child! Who taught you such perverse things?" Prahlad remained calm and said: "Vishnu. He reveals himself to all who are devoted to him." Hiranyakashypu shouted angrily: "This boy must not live! Take him away and kill him! Kill this vilest enemy disguised as my son. Poison him or attack him when he sleeps but kill him!"

Hiranyakashypu roared: "Where is Vishnu? If he is everywhere, why is he not here to protect you? If he is not there then I shall cut off your head with my sword. Let Vishnu, your Lord protect you."

As Hiranyakashypu was striking the pillar with his sword, Lord Vishnu, in the form of Nara-simha (nara=man,simha=lion) emerged from the Pillar. His look was neither that of beast nor man. Nara-simha caught Hiranyakashypu and it was the twilight hour, carried him to the threshold of the court- room which was neither indoors nor outdoors and while holding him on his lap, killed him. Prahlad was installed on the throne and he ruled wisely and well for many years.

Q. Explain the process of budding with an example.

A. Budding is a form of asexual reproduction where a bud/ outgrowth from the end or side of the parent organism emerges and develops into a new organism. This is seen in fungi, hydra as well as in plants. Usually, the protrusion stays attached to the primary organism for a while, before getting detached.

The new organism is naturally genetically identical to the parent. When yeast buds, one cell divides into two cells. When a sponge buds, a part of the parent sponge falls off and starts to grow into a new sponge. In hydra, a bud develops as an outgrowth due to repeated cell division at one specific site. These buds develop into tiny individuals and when fully mature, detach from the parent body and become new individuals.
