The central government on Monday (September 8) announced two new developments for the CBSE exams for Class X:
1. For March 2009: A grading system will be introduced.
Students will be evaluated throughout the year. Human Resource Development ministry officials said that the idea behind this move is to reduce the stress amongst students and their families.
The new grading system will be based on nine-point scale, starting from A1 (exceptional) up to E2 (unsatisfactory).

2. From academic year 2010-11: Grading system will continue, but board will be optional.
According to HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, after the board examination is abolished in 2011 (for class X), students need not take the board exam if they wish to continue in the same school,.
However, it will be mandatory for the students if their school has classes only up to Class X, and they need to transfer to another school for Class XI.
