How were the Norman , Tommie and Carlos were wrong in appealing for the equal rights of black as same of white?

The scenario involving Tommie, John and Norman highlighted an important landmark - Civil Rights Movement in United States.
The two African-Americans were not wrong in appealing for equal rights for them because everyone had the right to be treated equally are not judged on the basis of the colour of their skin. They believed in there should not be any kind of racial discrimination and religious discrimination.
