The art of poking fun through the pen and bringing out a grin and even a laugh (at times) with subjects ranging from politics to other day to day events, is what cartooning is all about and this is exactly what, Mr. Mario Joao Carlos do Rosario de Britto Miranda or just Mario Miranda, as he is better known has been doing for quite a while now, thereby, making him one of India’s and Goa’s - most renowned cartoonists.

A Goa village market is all noise and bustle, scents and smells, a strange mixture of fish and flowers. Buxom, garrulous fisherwomen, with sweet-smelling zaios adorning their hair, are busy enticing wily customers to buy their delicious river fish.

Mario, to his credit has a number of books, some of which are "Laugh it Off", "Goa with Love", "Germany in Wintertime", etc. and plans to republish the aforementioned titles in the near future as they are not available presently.

Over his career spanning six decades, Mario conducted solo exhibitions in 22 countries and was decorated with Indian civilian honours like Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.

Spain has recently conferred its highest civilian honour, the la Cruz de Isabel la Catolica, on celebrated cartoonist Mario de Miranda. This award is a token of appreciation for promoting Spanish culture through his work and strengthening ties with India.

"His works were not just cartoons, meant to be viewed, smiled at and forgotten. He told vivid stories of his times in Mumbai, Goa and other parts of the world and produced sheer works of art which can inspire generations," Winston Desouza, who hosted Mario and another Mumbai humorist.
