Uncle Pai's iconic Tinkle characters

The beloved Anant 'Uncle' Pai would have turned 82 on September 17 this year and Google paid him a fitting tribute in their doodle. Pai still remains fresh in our memories with timeless comics like 'Tinkle' and 'Amar Chitra Katha'. Suppandi

The dim-witted servant Suppandi always annoys his master by misunderstanding his commands, and made for hilarious reading. The square headed character is one of the comic's most recognizable faces and has managed to tickle the funny bone of readers from all ages over the years.

Kalia, the crow

When Tinkle was launched in 1980, Kalia the crow was one of its first characters. The intelligent crow always manages to escape from traps laid by the crocodile Doob Doob and the cunning jackal, Chamataka. Move over Aesop, Kalia the Crow was a far smarter animal than the fables ever had to offer.

Tantri, the Mantri

The conniving minister Tantri's constant plots to usurp Raja Hooja's throne were always foiled by fate. Tantri's henchmen, Dushtabuddhi and Vichitrabuddh, were later added to the strip. The funny take on the famous duo of Akbar and Birbal found many fans.

Shikari Shambu

The funny forest officer was known for his bravery but readers know that it was simply good luck that saved the day for Shambu every time around. Even though villagers considered him a valiant soul, the real Shambu was lazy and timid. We'll always remember his khakhi uniform, trademark china-man moustache and nagging wife.

Kapish, the monkey

Kapish the monkey, had supernatural powers that helped thwart the plans of the nasty jackal Sigal and his sidekick Peelu, the tiger. The clever monkey also always came to rescue of his friends who were trapped by the cunning duo. His adventures with Baboocha the bear, and Bundila the elephant, were always a fun read.
